Straight to the point. Addresses main features. Asks and answers relevant questions. Doesn’t employ technical overkill. Product tested for 2 months. These are all features of Caroline Hirons’ recent review of the Pestle & Mortar eye cream, Recover. If you want a respected reviewer’s review of Pestle & Mortar’s Recover Eye Cream, simply read Caroline’s recent blogpost here

We are thrilled to read Caroline describing Recover as light, hydrating, effective and non-oily. We formulated Recover to tick all of these boxes and it’s just fantastic when a plan comes together!

As Irish as Bono and good tea!

And proud of it we say! Yes, we’re as Irish as Bono and proud to say that over the next couple of years, our plan is that our distribution will grow as global as U2. We’re already on the shelves in Harvey Nichols Knightsbridge this year and gearing up to be stocked via some big American online retailers in the near future. Just like Lyon’s tea, you’ll soon be able to get Pestle & Mortar products just about everywhere…

The packaging is a joy!

We are passionate about a lot of things here in Pestle & Mortar and dispensing mechanisms and packaging are right up there. Recover is packaged in an airtight cylindrical bottle which dispenses every last drop. According to Caroline Hirons, ‘the packaging is a joy’. She noticed that the lid snaps shut with a very satisfying click – prefect for travel and just as we intended.

What’s not in it?

Well, Recover eye cream is free from all the nasties like parabens, silicones, sulphates and synthetic fragrance. It is vegan and cruelty freeCaroline sees Recover as being ‘extremely agreeable for those of you with hayfever/itchy eyes/contact lens wearers.’ It is light in texture, easily absorbed and has been clinically tested, dermatologically tested & clinically proven to be kind to skin, mild for skin, and safe for skin.

So what is the active ingredient?

Recover contains optimal levels of an active peptide, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5 in a formulation which is rich in a host of other super beneficial ingredients such as coffee bean extract, passionfruit seed extract, Irish moss extract and beta-carotene. Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5 tells skin cells to boost collagen production naturally. This makes it a super-effective anti-ageing tool, particularly as other products that contain animal tissue derived collagen may be too thick to properly penetrate the skin

The days of harsh cleansing products which strip the skin of natural radiance boosting oils are thankfully well and truly behind us. These days, any skincare enthusiast worth her salt knows that cleansing should be gentle and nourishing whilst at the same time doing its cleaning job. Pestle & Mortar’s Renew is an illuminating gel cleanser formulated with a combination of hydrating and soothing ingredients such as papaya, mango and jojoba oil which nourishes and polishes the skin whilst cleansing it of make-up and grime.

Refinery 29 have hailed Renew as a ‘killer cleanser’ which does the work of both a cleanser and a mask! Read what they have to say about it here.

And it Smells Amazing!

Renew Illuminating Gel Cleanser is packed with skin-nourishing ingredients. Jojoba oil is a super hydrator so when you use it, you can rest assured that you are not exasperating the drying effects of water. We recommend applying one pump of Renew from the dispenser (described by Refinery 29 as a ‘super sanitary’ dispensing mechanism!), massaging it into the face before removing it along with the day’s grime using the Pestle & Mortar double-sided cloth. The subtle scent of fermented papaya and mango is calming and relaxing. As Refinery 29 puts it – it’s a win win!

Why is Cleansing so Important?

If you’re not cleansing correctly with the right cleansing product, there’s little point in anything else. Your skin will not effectively absorb other products and you will experience dryness, flakiness, break -outs, clogged pores and dull skin from make-up and pollution particles blocking your pores and dumping any nasties they contain into your precious dermis! Do you need any more reasons than these? We think not…………

Sensitive Skin? We’ve got you covered!

A common skincare worry where cleansing is concerned is that it’s difficult to find the right product for your skin. The cleanser that is working wonders for your best friend just may not suit you. You may experience flakiness, tightness or even rashes when using the cleanser that your Mum swears by. Well, do not despair! The beauty of Renew is that it is free from nasties – it is paraben free, 100% vegan and contains no synthetic fragrance. Basically, it’s suitable for all skin types, even the most sensitive. As with all Pestle & Mortar products, Renew is also cruelty-free. Clear skin, clear conscience. Again, it’s a win win!

If we’re going to listen to anyone on the subject of beauty, it’s surely the Beauty Editor of Vogue.co.uk, the iconic fashion and beauty edit which is heralded as being ‘thought-provoking, relevant and always influential’. This month, the Beauty Editor at Vogue is talking about Hyaluronic Acid, the skincare ingredient that has withstood the test of time. Pestle and Mortar’s Pure Hyaluronic Serum makes the cut, described by the Vogue Beauty Editor as ‘a lightweight hyaluronic serum which absorbs quickly and makes a great base for make-up’. Exactly what it was intended to be! Read what Vogue have to say about Pestle and Mortar’s Pure Hyaluronic Serum here.

Why has Hyaluronic Acid as a skincare ingredient withstood the test of time?

Hyaluronic Acid is an ingredient which has proven skin benefits and super hydrating effects, but what is it and why are we being advised to use it? Skincare trends come and go through the beauty industry, but hyaluronic acid has withstood the test of time. Why?

Described by Vogue as a ‘beauty hero’ which plumps and hydrates the skin, hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide (essentially a very large sugar!) which occurs naturally in the body and which is a structural component of skin. It is a major component of the skin’s extracellular matrix and plays a crucial role in retaining moisture as one single molecule can hold up to 1000 times its own weight in
water! In short, it is a moisturising powerhouse.

As we age, our body’s natural production of hyaluronic slows down – the effects are, simply put, ageing – dryness, dullness, wrinkles and fine lines. Creams, and particularly, serums which contain hyaluronic acid or its lower molecular weight salt, sodium hyaluronate, are very effective tools for replacing water loss in the skin. Hyaluronic acts like a sponge holding vast amounts of water in the skin and thereby making it plumper, firmer and more luminous. And we LOVE plumper, firmer and
more luminous!

Why you should include a hyaluronic serum in your skincare routine

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, an attractor of water. It typically has a watery texture and absorbs quickly into the skin. A ‘liquidy’ serum is a better vehicle for hyaluronic than a thick cream – the cream will sit on the surface of the skin and function to lock everything in whereas the serum will absorb quickly and instantly.

Hyaluronic is combined with water in serums and this provides a key benefit. The water is bound by the hyaluronic acid and then delivered straight into the skin. It is an instant moisture boost with ongoing hydration benefits. There is benefit to layering a cream with a more emollient texture over your hyaluronic serum, as this will serve to maintain the moisture that the humectant provides and prevent it from evaporating. The important thing here is to know your skin and its requirements and
to change up your routine as the seasons require.

Hyaluronic serums are lightweight and easily absorbed. They deliver phenomenal hydrating effects to the skin and because hyaluronic is a substance which occurs naturally in the body, it is suitable for virtually all skin-types. Your serum can be used alone, with moisturiser or as a hydrating make-up primer. Remember – the key to getting the most out of your serum is a killer cleansing routine so don’t neglect this! Dead cells sitting on the surface of the skin will not do your serum’s efficacy any
favours!

Men’s Grooming. It’s important. It’s crucial. And it’s all about Retinol this month in The Manual, the publication that is every man’s essential guide to living, grooming and fashion. Pestle & Mortar’s Superstar Night Oil makes the cut – recommended for men who are serious about looking after their skin and who would like to actually reverse wrinkles!

The Manual touts Superstar as ‘bad ass’ and describes this bad boy as being ‘no joke’. We’re not joking – check out what the Manual has to say about it right here.

Retinol for Guys – why do you need it?

As The Manual eloquently puts it, Retinol is ‘really the only proven component in any skincare product to reverse wrinkles’. This fact is twice repeated, probably because it sounds unbelievable! Retinol is an essential part of reversing and repairing damage to your skin and it’s easy to incorporate into the male routine. Just make sure you buy the right one! Pestle & Mortar’s Superstar Night Oil is a retinol oil which is perfect for guy-skin – blended in a base of cold-pressed rapeseed oil, Superstar is a Retinol Oil which
works exceptionally well with the oils that are naturally present in the male dermis.

Oil on Oil?? Are you serious?

Yes, we are serious. Men often shy away from using anything with ‘oil’ in the description because male skin tends to be oilier than female skin and the theory is ‘Why put oil on oil? Won’t that just equal oilier?’ Male hormones (like testosterone) are responsible for causing coarse hair growth of the beard. Testosterone also increases the size of the sebaceous gland (the gland that produces sebum). This means that men produce more oil than women.

So, the oil on oil question…here’s the answer…skin will become oilier when the pH of your skin is off balance. This imbalance occurs when we use harsh exfoliants or soaps that strip the skin of natural oils. The skin then produces more oil to combat this. Using the right oil product can help balance and hydrate and prevent the oil glands from becoming too overactive. A bad-ass Retinol Oil like Superstar will re-balance oil-production and will stimulate the skin to regenerate and move through its natural life-cycle more quickly. It’s a no-brainer.
