Harmful Beauty Ingredients you MUST Stay Away from!

You’re always on the lookout for the best things to include in your daily routine. But there are some harmful beauty ingredients that must not get near your skin!

Here’s our list of nasty ingredients you must stay away from and how!

Harmful Beauty Ingredients

Parabens

Parabens are used commonly as a preservative in most skin and beauty products, and they easily penetrate the skin. You can find them in moisturizers, anti-aging creams, foundations and most fragranced products. Industry reports suggest that 75 to 90 percent of cosmetics may contain parabens.

Harmful effects?

Parabens are shown to be an endocrine disruptor and are also suggested to be linked to cancer.

Verdict

Stay away from them!

What to do?

Spot and stay away from beauty products that contain parabens. You can identify parabens in your beauty buys by looking out formethylparaben, butylparaben, propylparaben, isobutylparaben, ethylparaben, polyparaben and isobutylparaben.

Mineral Oil

Mineral oil is a hydrocarbon that locks in moisture to heal dry skin and makes your beauty products feel smooth and luxurious.

Harmful effects?

Experts warn that because of the barrier effect it has on skin, mineral oil can also clog pores. Many dermatologists agree that products with both mineral oil and paraffin actually damage the skin barrier and increase water loss.

Verdict

Keep it away from your skin!

What to do?

Your skin needs its dose of oils, so opt for natural oils that hydrate skin without harming – think grapeseed oil, natural rosehip oil, sunflower oil and retinol oil!

Silicones

Silicone is a chemically derived product that easily fills in uneven skin texture like fine lines and scars to make it appear smooth instantly! So most makeup primers contain silicones to help the primer do its job before makeup.

Verdict

Opinions are still divided about silicones’ good and bad effects, but most skincare experts agree you’re better without them!

What to Do?

Check if your product contains dimethicone or methicone (or usually any ingredient ending in ‘cone’) in the ingredient list as these are usually silicones. Opt for naturally hydrating skin primers like products containing hyaluronic acid that plumps up your skin and improves complexion over time.

Sulphates

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES) are usually found in foaming products like cleansers and shampoos.

Harmful effects?

SLSs and SLESs can cause acne, flaky skin and fine lines as they strip your hair and skin of natural oils and protective barriers and may also contain carcinogen called 1,4-dioxane.

Verdict

Best avoided!

What to Do?

Try oil-based cleansers without sulphates, like Pestle & Mortar Erase and Renew that deep cleanse without a drying damaging effect.

Propylene Glycol

Propylene glycol is a skin-conditioning agent found in many moisturizers, makeup products, sunscreens, shampoos and hair sprays.

Harmful effects?

It is a known skin irritant and is also linked to dermatitis and hives.

Verdict

Definitely among those harmful beauty ingredients you should avoid!

What to Do?

Check your ingredients list and opt for Propylene glycol free beauty and skincare products.

Synthetic Fragrances

Fragrances fall under trade secret laws to stop competitors from copying them, hence FDA and other regulators can’t determine what’s really hidden in those synthetic fragrances!

Harmful effects?

Synthetic fragrances often contain endocrine-disrupting ingredients that can cause skin rashes, migraines, respiratory issues and even birth defects.

Verdict

No matter how good they smell, keep them away!

What to Do?

Go for products scented with natural ingredients and essential oils, like Pestle & Mortar Hydrate moisturizer that moisturizes and smells refreshing without the nasties.

The next time you go shopping for your beauty and skincare products, make sure you check the label for these harmful beauty ingredients and stay away from them!
